Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that she had pushed the Justice Department to grant same-sex married couples federal benefits when the June 26th ruling occurred but it would take a few weeks for the work to be finalized.
The Obama Administration granted same-sex couples marriage benefits but only to the couples that lived in states where same-sex marriage was not prohibited. As of yesterday, the federal government granted access to Social Security and Veterans benefits for all same-sex marriages.
Lynch stated that the Justice Department, “will continue to work across the administration to fulfill our commitment to to equal treatment for all Americans, including, equal access to benefits of marriage that the [Obergefell v. Hodges] decision guarantees.”
As of Thursday, July 9th marriage benefits are available to gay and lesbian couples around the United States.
