Growing up in a country that has such a horrifying history of hate, how is one supposed to think? How should a mother raise her child knowing the world that we live in? With stories of Trayvon Martin, Renisha McBride, and Jonathan Ferrell, how is anyone supposed to feel safe walking the streets or approaching people? It has been 50 years since the Civil Rights Movement and black people, male and female, still have to be afraid of being killed unjustly. Knowing this, how is a mother supposed to teach their child that the country they live in is against them? Dominique Christina, a poet, author, and mother, chooses to tell her child the story of Emmett Till. It’s a horrible, painful story that shows a part of history about the hate that still spews from people today. Check out her moving poem “For Emmett Till” below.
